Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, herself Jewish, told the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus that Jews have “a moral imperative to place the needs of the world above even our own self-interest and, yes, even our own survival.”

That was not abstract ethics. The political context was November and the U.S. Senate race: pressure on Jews uneasy about Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, and tempted by Republican Mike Rogers. El-Sayed’s Israel record, and his “hurt people hurt people” line after the March 2026 terrorist attack on Temple Israel outside Detroit, already alarmed many Jewish Democrats.
