As Jews around the world mark Tisha B’Av and mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples, something profound is happening in our time. We in Israel are no longer only remembering destruction. We are living the process of redemption. Just a few years ago, only a small number of Jews were allowed to ascend the Temple Mount at any given time. Jewish prayer and song were strictly forbidden. We were forbidden from drinking from the water fountains on the Temple Mount. Muslim rioters regularly harassed visitors and tried to block any strengthening of the Jewish connection to our holiest site in Jerusalem — Har HaBayit. That reality is slowly but steadily changing. More Jews are now ascending the Temple Mount in accordance with Jewish law. More are praying, singing, and reconnecting with the place where the Divine Presence once dwelled and will dwell again. The greatest shift, however, is not only in the regulations. It is in the consciousness of the Jewish people.
